Ideas & Techniques in Art
8th GRADE UNITS
ZEN
Zen is a philosophy and a way of making art! We discuss the idea of "mindfulness"--or being totally present in the moment, and "wabi-sabi"--the beauty of imperfection and impermanence. Students apply these principles to art-making through calligraphy, and brush painting. Then, we'll have some fun creating self-portrait "zentangles".

Chuck Close Grid Portraits
Eighth graders will complete a project based on the work of renowned artist, Chuck Close. Close is known for his large head portraits in a variety of of media. Close started as a photorealist painter and later moved on to more abstracted mark-making in his portraits.
Students first start by finding an image of a famous person of their choosing online. Students then cropp the picture to emphasize the face, and divide the picture into a grid with 1"x1" squares. Next, students create a larger grid on drawing paper with 2"x2" squares, and transfer their image by hand, square by square. While the process is a little painstaking, many are pleasantly surprised with the results--and the likenesses they are able to achieve with the technique! |
